Did you know that 1980 was the first year the Census Bureau became more political? States, local government, and civil rights groups filed lawsuits challenging the results. One of the things census racial data is used for is to reapportion seats in the House of Representatives. Multiracial people were not allowed to check more than one race on the 1980 census.
