NCES Teacher Demographic Data: Who's Teaching Our Kids?

According to a recent report released by the National Center for Education Statistics, entitled  Beginning K–12 Teacher Characteristics and Preparation by School Type, 2009, the racial and ethnic breakdown of teachers employed in U.S. secondary school was as follows:

77% are white
9.1% are Hispanic
7.6% are black
4% self-identify as two or more races
3.4% are Asian

If I am not mistaken, 100% of teachers at my son's school are white, making it that much more important that we make a conscience effort to expose him to positive role models and influences of all races in other arenas. Our family is diverse, our church is diverse, his athletic leagues are diverse, the service projects we undertake are with and for diverse groups, and yet I still wonder about the impact of this lack of diversity in his school where he spends thirty hours a week.
